When you think of a family vacation, what comes to mind? Many people think of heading to the beach or a popular theme park, but there is another option to consider: staying in a cabin on the Tennessee River. There are numerous cabins for rent in this region, some with water and electricity, and others with virtually zero modern amenities. Here are a few reasons why this makes for an amazing family vacation.

1. There's a lot to do on the water.

Staying on the Tennessee River is different from staying on a lake or ocean beachfront, for sure. But there is still plenty to do on the water. This is a popular destination for kayaking, and if your kids are younger, paddle boating in a quieter part of the water is an option. 2. You can play in the woods, too.

At the beach, there's really just the beach. But when you stay on the banks of the Tennessee River, you get to enjoy both water and woods. This is a good opportunity to teach your kids about different species of plants and animals and to expose them to the beauty of undisturbed nature.

When you stay in a hotel, someone else does everything for you. There's even less responsibility than when you're at home. The same is not true when you stay in a cabin. Especially if you choose a cabin without running water or electricity, you will have to light a fire to cook, fetch water from a nearby source, rely on candles or gas lamps for lighting, and so forth. This can be a good opportunity to teach kids about resourcefulness and how to thrive without all of the modern conveniences they are used to. Still, in most cabins along the Tennessee River, you are only a few miles from civilization, at most, if you do end up needing something.
