If you're on a budget but still want to vacation, there are some extremely affordable ways to find accommodations away from home. Use these three tactics, and you should be able to save substantially on a vacation rental.

1. Book During the Off-Season

Most travel destinations have a peak season and an off-season, and things tend to get a lot cheaper during the off-season when fewer people want to visit. You'll usually find discounts on lodging, food, and activities during this time of year, and the amount you can save on lodging alone is often substantial.

When you travel during the off-season, some attractions may be closed or have limited hours because there isn't as much demand. Most destinations still have plenty of fun things to do, though, and those that remain open are usually the ones that locals frequent. Attractions that stay open all year must attract locals in order to maintain business when tourists aren't around.

2. Share a Larger Accommodation

If you're traveling with another person or group, consider sharing lodging expenses. In many cases, getting a vacation rental that's able to accommodate a large group costs less on a per-person basis than what getting individual accommodations for each individual or group would be.

In particular, vacation houses can be an especially good solution that allows multiple groups to travel together affordably. The cost of a vacation house can be spread across many people, and a house offers a combination of private and communal spaces for everyone.

You may want to book a vacation house if you're traveling with other families, a bunch of friends, or several smaller groups of people.

3. Look for Complimentary Breakfast

Even if you have to spend a little bit more for a vacation rental that includes a complimentary breakfast, the breakfast can still help you save money on your trip. When breakfast is included in your stay, you don't have to worry about purchasing this meal for each person in your party.

How much you save by getting a vacation rental that has complimentary breakfast depends on how large your party is, but the amount can be substantial. If you have four or more people, even a light breakfast at a cafe won't be cheap.

Furthermore, you can leverage the complimentary breakfast to save as much as possible. Filling up on a free breakfast will let you get by on a lighter lunch that doesn't cost as much to purchase while you're out.
