More Than The Margaritas -- 5 Ways To Relax Like A Pro In The Florida Keys

Posted on: 28 October 2016

Visitors to the Florida Keys are usually lured in by the area's well-earned reputation as a place to relax and unwind. If that's your vacation goal, there are as many ways to accomplish it as there are visitors to the islands. Here are 5 surefire means to de-stress your life in the Keys.

Stay on the Ocean. There are a lot of different lodging choices in the Keys, but for the best relaxation, opt for a hotel that's a little off the beaten track. An ocean view room in a luxury resort or hotel allows you to wake up to the calming waves and enjoy breakfast with the ocean before heading out for the day. If you're traveling without kids, look for an adults-only hotel for an added air of relaxation.

Enjoy the Sunset. Uninterrupted views of the ocean offer breathtaking sunsets pretty much anywhere in the islands. The most famous spot to soak in the sunset is Key West's Mallory Square, where locals and tourists alike gather to toast the day's end. However, just about anywhere near the water will provide a great view, so drive out to the water's edge and open a beach chair to live like a true Conch native.

Get in the Water. Be sure to get into the ocean at some point in your Key West vacation. If you're certified -- or want to get certified on vacation -- the scuba diving in this unique coral reef is spectacular. Not certified? Try out a demonstration scuba tour or get a taste of the possibilities with "snuba" (diving while connected to a floating tank instead of free diving). Not that adventurous? Try snorkeling with your buddies in the shallow waters near Key Largo or Key West.

Cruise. The Florida keys were built on ocean travel, so enjoy this history by taking a relaxing cruise on the water. You can choose from a variety of boat trips -- including sailboats, glass-bottom boats, catamarans, and large cruising yachts. Book a sunset cruise for the best way to relax at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

Kayak in the Mangrove Canals. Get away from the rest of the tourists by booking a kayak trip through the mangrove ecosystem. Eco-tour operators can help you learn about the unique environment in these swampy flats while you glide serenely through the wilderness.

Any one of these ideas will help you reduce your stress and enjoy a quiet vacation more... and you'll come away understanding what makes these islands a true paradise even in modern times.
